The Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska: Working to Save Alaska’s Lands and Sportsman’s Use of Them

February 13th, 2012 by sportshows No comments »

We’d like to introduce you to a group that is really dedicated to preserving Alaska’s public lands for sportsman’s use.  The Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska is the only conservation entity whose sole purpose is to engage hunters and anglers from across the country in management decisions affecting Alaska’s public lands and your opportunity to hunt and fish on them.  From the rainforests of Southeast Alaska to Southwest Alaska’s famed Bristol Bay region, stop by to talk about Alaska and how you can help protect some of the planet’s finest hunting and angling.

The Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska will be at the Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow, February 16-19  in Oaks, PA at Booth 511.  Stop in and find out more about them and more importantly, how you can help through local decisions, such as buying wild salmon vs. farm raised at the grocery store – it tastes a whole lot better too!

@ the Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow, Oaks, PA – February 16-19, the World Fishing & Outdoor Exposition,  Suffern, NY – March 1-4 & The Saltwater Fishing Expo, Somerset, NJ – March 16-18:

Porte-Bote  – Booth 414 @ Oaks /  Booth 819 @ Suffern / Booth 236 @ Somerset

On the anniversary of 40 years of continuous production, Porta-Bote International has unveiled its new high-performance portable folding boats.  See them at the show!

The internationally patented Porta-Bote is now available in the Genesis and eXxstream Series of 8′, 10′, 12′ and 14’ models with hulls weighing in at 54, 67, 77 and 97lbs. respectively. All Porta-Botes can be opened in just a few minute, weigh half as much as comparable aluminum boats and store easily with their 4 inch (11.4cm), flat folded size. The tough hulls carry a 10 year limited warranty by the manufacturer, never need painting and are unaffected by saltwater, fuel and even battery acid.

Naturally, Porta-Botes are ideal for the boating enthusiast who enjoys fishing, hunting and sailing but lacks the space to store ordinary boats. Porta-Botes are also extremely practical for owners of small autos and Rvs since they easily stow on the roof or side of the vehicle. By eliminating the need to tow a heavy trailer, fuel costs are significantly reduced.

In addition to being used as an owner’s main craft, Porta-Botes make excellent ship-to-shore dinghies since they take up so little space on board sailboats and cabin cruisers.

As for performance, Porta-Botes leave similar sized aluminum boats and inflatables in their wake only needing half the horsepower and using half the fuel of these heavier boats. The hull’s design traps the bow wave and guides it under the boat to dramatically reduce drag while increasing speed and stability.

Smart Troll  – Booth 310 @ Oaks /  Booth 434 @ Suffern / Booth 509 @ Somerset

“Smart Troll” measures lure depth so you know how deep the lure or bait is trolled. It also measures the temperature at the depth of the lure.  “Smart Troll” is the answer to the question; “is there a way to tell how deep a lure runs?” It is the only electronic system that enables you to tell how deep your lure is when trolling.

“Smart Troll” also tells you the water temperature at the lure’s depth.  It is an electronic system designed to help you know exactly how deep your lure (or bait) is running when trolling for fish. It can be used with any ordinary fishing rod and reel. You can fish straight off the boat, or use ”Smart Troll with a downrigger, outrigger, flat lines and even with planer boards.

You can use ”Smart Troll” for both fresh water and salt water fishing…and it is very easy to use.  Whether fishing with lures or fishing with live (or cut) bait… ”Smart Troll” will help you to increase your catch!!  “Smart Troll” tells you exactly how deep you are trolling a lure, cut bait or live bait.

The ”Smart Troll” system includes a Hand-Held Receiver, a Hydrophone and one or two Sensors. It has the ability to monitor one lure or two lures (at the same time) and is very easy to use. Simply attach the small Acoustic Sensor between your leader and main line (with the lure or bait of your choice attached to the other end of the leader). The leader can be any length that you choose. The sensor is so small (0.5 inch diameter) and light (about 1 ounce in air and virtually weightless in water) that it hardly affects the action or “feel” of the lure and is not noticeable at all when fighting a fish.

The ”Smart Troll” Sensor incorporates tiny electronic circuits that monitor the lure’s depth and temperature and transmits a signal through the water to the boat. Every 10 to 15 seconds the sensor sends an encoded acoustic signal through the water to the Hydrophone. The Hydrophone converts it to an electrical signal and the Receiver “reads” the electrical signal and displays the lure’s depth and the water temperature at that depth. It works GREAT at Depths over 200 feet and speeds of up to 4.5 MPH and with over 100 yards of line out.

Sting—O G-Rod Series

Simple Reliable – Great Rods without the Hype

Sting-o Fish known for their jigs, took the next step with their new rod series. Like their jigs, these rods offer exceptional quality at a reasonable price. These rods are made for fisherman. Their bend reduces strain on the angler and provides the angler lifting power with plenty in reserve.

Blank: Ultra strong Carbon Fiber

Guides: Polished Zirconia ceramic ring. The Zirconia ring has similar qualities to Silicon Carbide without it being brittle. It offers the smooth, strong surface for today’s braid lines

Reel Seat: Aluminum hoods and two lock nuts, graphite body give you strength without the weight for a 4 seasons rod that will not leave you cold in the winter

Gimbal: Aluminum Gimbal with rounded edges for comfort in the fight out of the belt

The 5’6 model is a true speed jigging rod, short light weigh made for a full day of jigging

The 6’6 model is the perfect alternative to heavy party boat rods. Can also serve as a shorter popping rod for the angler that wants to try their hand at jigging and popping. Or be just the right tool when the fish are too big for the 7-8’ popping rods as realized on the Cape this season.

The 7’6 popping rod is the perfect rod for the novice and the seasoned angler alike. Light weight to cast all day, throws a plug very well and the soft curve of the rod makes fighting and lifting large fish as effortless as possible.

Desktop Scouting

January 20th, 2012 by sportshows No comments »

The digital world is truly everywhere – even on your hunting and fishing trips.  Stu Bristol has submitted this great article that offers tips on how to get the most out of your hunting and/or fishing trips by using today’s technology.  Thank you for the article Stu!   Visit Stu Bristol’s site for more tips and information at www.stubristol.com and you can also see him at the Eastern Fishing & Outdoor Exposition, February 10-12, at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.

Desktop Scouting

 By Stu Bristol

By far the most asked question at my sport show seminars is: “How do you go into a strange area and instantly find fish or game? Do you have a staff of hunters and anglers that go before you and make notes?”  Sorry to disappoint you people but the secret to pre-scouting success is sitting right on top of my desk in the office; my desktop computer with a high speed web connection.

I may have been one of the forerunners in the field of desktop scouting but given today’s technology on desktop computers, digital telephone, laptop computers and the new tablets, just about everyone can duplicate my techniques.

I begin with a road map, either on paper or, as I prefer, a DVD land navigation software that integrates both road maps and genuine U.S.G.S. topographic maps. I locate the area I will be hunting, fishing etc. and copy and paste a segment of the road map and then the corresponding area on the topo quadrangle.

By examining the topographic projection I can see the contour of the land, lake, pond or river. I take note of contour lines that are close together indicating steep terrain. If I’m fishing and the contour lines are close together along one shoreline, I can be certain the water column will be deeper along that shoreline, probably holding coldwater species.

If I am scouting for deer I look for what I call “game funnels.” These are areas that all game, especially deer will have to ‘funnel’ down or be forced through a narrow part of the terrain such as around a vernal pool or between a ridge saddle.

Next I’ll look for wooded marshes. These are indicated by small hash marks to simulate marsh grass. If the background color is green, there is a minimal amount of water and hunters can walk through. If the background color is blue you will need a canoe.

Many times within those wooded marshes that are indicated by marsh grass and green background color there are elevation changes or “islands.” These are prime places for trophy whitetail bucks to bed or hang out during the bulk of daylight hours to escape hunters. They will move in and out of these sanctuaries at or before daybreak and again at dusk. Set up a ground or tree blind taking wind direction into account and your success should increase.

The same method of scouting can be utilized even before heading out looking for wild turkeys. All wildlife species are creatures of habit. They sleep somewhere, they feed somewhere and they prefer certain terrain features to court a mate.

Wild turkeys will most often roost in softwood trees a few yards inside green fields or in the deep woods, within sight of a woodland opening and/or a small silent stream. They avoid noisy brooks and wide rivers.

Some of the same given facts can be utilized for deer and turkeys. First rule of thumb is to find the hens and find the does and the male counterparts will find you. Never lose sight of the most glaring fact associated with fishing and hunting is that the hunter/angler becomes a play actor.

The fishing lure you present is really an extension of yourself in that you manipulate the lure to imitate food. Look at each of your most productive lures and you will quickly see that you are the “puppet master.” In my upcoming book I refer to myself as “The Deadly Imposter.”

While turkey hunting in the spring you assume many roles including a lovesick hen a challenging gobbler, young jake, etc. but never forget you are a play actor and the section of woodland you selected is your “stage.”

Successful deer hunters rely upon their ability to locate the travel routes of deer both male and female. They very often use grunt calls, rattling antlers and bodily fluid scents to fool their prey.

Begin with road maps, topographic maps a good quality compass a handheld GPS receiver and the willingness to re-examine your role as the hunter. Hone your performances and come prepared.

For a face-to-face discussion on this topic, meet me at the DCU Center, Worcester, MA on February 10 – 11 when I present seminars on desktop scouting. Visit www.sportshows.com for times. Questions and comments are also welcome at my website, www.stubristol.com or find me on Facebook.

Sporting Dog Feeding Tip

December 21st, 2011 by sportshows No comments »

If you live in the North and are now looking at a cold snowy winter rather than continuing with warm days afield, you’re probably putting up your gun for the season.  Unless you plan to continue to run your dog vigorously this winter, you need to consider changing how you feed your dog.  Remember that Native Dog Food  is the only high-performance premium dog food with a four level feeding system.

My dogs are fed Level 3 (30% protein/20% fat) beginning around August 1st in preparation for the hunting season.  Now, however, I’ve dropped to Level 2 (26% protein/16% fat) since, with less exercise, they don’t need the calories and protein.  Since the basic ingredients are the same in the Native level system, I don’t have to worry about my dogs’ digestive system adjusting to different ingredients, as would be the case with other dog food brands.

The Joys of Ice Fishing

December 12th, 2011 by sportshows No comments »

Well, it’s finally feeling more like December in the northeast with the nights dropping into the teens and 20′s and the daytime highs in the 30′s and 40′s.  The ice has not formed yet, but soon we’ll start seeing those ice shacks along our rivers and lakes.  Start planning for your next ice fishing adventure with some of the tips and ideas from Stu Bristol.  Thank you to Stu Bristol for contributing this post.  Visit his site for more tips and information at www.stubristol.com

The Joys of Ice Fishing

By Stu Bristol, Master Maine Guide

Why remain one of “those guys” that sits on the cold ice all day, waiting for those one or two trout or salmon to select your tiny minnow swimming sluggishly under the ice? Bring the whole family or friends, or both and head out for the land of many flags (tip-ups, that is).

Regardless of which state you winter fish, there is sure to be plenty of lakes and ponds that offer less finicky fish species such as bass, crappie, perch and more. Bring along a BBQ grill, some burgers and dogs or share freshly killed venison steaks. You can even munch out on fish fillets caught just moments before.

Drag out a fishing shelter or make one of your own design. The same tent you use for summer camping works very well on the ice. Either way, you’ll need to rig up ice anchors to keep the whole thing from sailing across the ice.

Even if you lone wolf the day, bring along a radio, a good book or any of the creature comforts that help you relax and get you mind off the bitter cold winds and ice cube hands.

Ice fishing, over the years has always been a sport enhanced by home-made innovations. A makeshift shelter can be fashioned by using three or four tent poles or sapling tied in tee pee fashion to ward off the winds. Isn’t it funny how a sheet of newsprint will stop a stiff, cold breeze?

Of course you’ll want something more substantial than newsprint but it doesn’t take much to ward off the cold. Most of the time our shelter isn’t even used on sunny calm days. It’s there for the family members who want more warmth or a quiet darkened place to play games on one of the modern cellphones or tablets.

There is no written rule that demands you sit diligently and watch for the tip-up flag to wave. Believe me, when a flag goes up just about anyone in sight will shout it out. There are even signals and buzzers that can be attached to tip-ups to signal a bite.

This just be my take on ice fishing but the day really needs to center around food. I let the others in the party run after the flags while I prepare comfort foods fit for any tailgate party.

Burgers and dogs are fine but why not pick up some skewers and make up a batch of ka-bobs? What you impale on those skewers is varied as your imagination. First choice, of course would be moose or venison steak alternately spaced with onions, peppers potatoes and more.

As for the cooking fire, I shy away from the propane grills due to the low pressure and cold temperatures. Many times the propane governor will freeze. Instead I bring along charcoal or just enough hardwood sticks to cook. Neither one will leave a mess on the ice and are biodegradable. Less weight to carry back to the truck, also, unless your sled it weighted down with giant fish.

Check the regulations and ask around where the best spots on the ice might be. You could just sit on shore for a few minutes and take notes of where other anglers have been setting up. By no means do I suggest that you crowd out the regulars but, during the weekdays, you could very well have the ice to yourself.

Safety is always a concern when ice fishing and I never leave the truck without an ice chisel. They are for sale at most sporting goods outlets that sell ice fishing gear but I made a couple by flattening out the end of a 6-foot length of ¾-inch electrical conduit and sharpening the flattened end. Be sure to wrap a few turns of hockey stick tape where you hold the chisel to keep it from slipping out of your grasp and into the water.

Test the ice every few yards, especially on warm days or late in the season. Many times the ice will be solid at daybreak but will give way by mid-morning or later in the day. Be especially cautious of places that may have current under the ice such as water between island, around the points of land, and the mouths of brooks or streams entering the pond or lake.

Wild Turkey Hunting Tips

November 15th, 2011 by sportshows No comments »

Wild Turkey Hunting Tips

By Stu Bristol

What’s in my Turkey Vest?

In a perfect world my day ends with 20+ pounds more in my vest than when it began so I don’t need to carry around any more weight than absolutely necessary.

Completely empty out your turkey hunting vest and prioritize. What do you really need? What creature comforts are you including and how much useless junk has accumulated?

Here’s a list of what makes it inside my turkey vest during both the Spring and Fall seasons.

Water bottle- at least 20 ounces, stored in a vertical pocket. Water stored horizontally makes gurgling sounds that could cost you a longbeard.

Calls – One box call,  one owl hooter, one slate over glass call with peg for dry conditions and one Acrylic striker for wet conditions and at least three diaphragms; one young hen, one raspy old hen and one cutter call. I carry a gobbler call only during the Fall season to create mock dominance struggles.

Decoy -  Folding or roll-up decoy that I stuff with grass or leaves but carry flat or folded.

Food, Comfort Items – sandwiches, energy bars, trail mix, toilet paper, matches, Sailor’s folding knife – sharp heavy blade with serrated rope cutter near the handle. (on my belt)

Navigation Tools – Orienteering style compass, basic GPS receiver and 7.5 minute topo map.

License, Tags – Copy of current license and original turkey tags, pinned in holder on the iside pocket of vest. Some states allow online downloading. I seldom carry my wallet while hunting. I also use reusable waterproof tags that attach to the turkey.

Plastic Bags – With zipper closure for use in keeping camera, cell phone and other items clean and dry and to store fiddleheads, brook trout and other edibles I may come across. I wear point-and-shoot camera on my belt and turn off phone and store it inside pocket in a plastic bag for emergency use only.

Fishing Gear – Craft a lightweight fishing rod and line by taking the tip-top of a broken flyrod or spinning rod. Add 10 feet of weight forward flyline and 6 feet of tapered leader. Select productive flies and lures – no more than 6. I carry nymphs, wet fly, streamer and small spinning lures.

Orange Cap or Vest – Lightweight vest and wool cap. Easily stored and used anytime I am walking in the turkey woods.
