The New Chicagoland Fishing, Travel & Outdoor Expo Set to Open In January 2013
Anglers and all outdoor enthusiasts in the Great Lakes region will find a new premier fishing, travel and outdoor expo waiting for them in 2013

Alexandria, VA – May 2, 2012 -Alexandria, VA – The American Sportfishing Association (ASA), the trade association that represents the sportfishing industry and the broader recreational fishing community, is proud to announce the launch of a new fishing, travel and outdoor sports show that will serve the greater Chicago and Great Lakes market. Titled the New Chicagoland Fishing, Travel & Outdoor Expo, this new show is targeted to the area’s sportsmen and women. The show will take place January 24-27, 2013, at the Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, Ill.

In addition to producing the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST), the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, ASA also produces a series of outdoor sports shows on both coasts under the ASA/Eastern Fishing and Outdoor Expositions with show locations in Worcester, Mass., Suffern, N.Y., Philadelphia, Pa. and Somerset, N.J.; and the Fred Hall Shows…The Ultimate Outdoor Experience with show locations in Long Beach and San Diego, Calif.

“Chicago and the Great Lakes region represent a significant freshwater fishing market. The area’s anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts deserve a premier fishing, travel and outdoor expo,” said ASA President and CEO Mike Nussman. “This new show will provide our member companies an opportunity to introduce new products to Midwest anglers and all sportsmen and women who are eager to see new products to enhance their fishing and outdoor experience. The January show dates are traditional in this market and provide a taste of spring when cabin fever has set in.”

Many ASA members have already committed to supporting this new event. “Chicago and the Great Lakes region is such a big recreational fishing and outdoor sports market; this new show just makes sense,” said Rapala Executive Vice President Gregg Wollner. “I’m excited that we can bring the enjoyment and high-quality production of ASA’s other consumer shows to the area with the new Chicagoland Fishing, Travel & Outdoor Expo.”

Kirk Immens, president, Sportco Marketing, Inc., who represents Shimano American Corporation, said, “Absolutely Shimano will be there. Shimano has a wide-variety of products for the freshwater angler and we’re looking forward to showcasing our product in this market.” Randy Lemcke, senior vice president, Plano Molding Company, remarked, “The region has been waiting for a well-produced, manufacturer-supported show to come to this area. Plano is looking forward to being at the new show’s launch.” Ken Hammond, CEO, The Hammond Group, and ASA’s Membership Committee Chairman said that a number of the major fishing tackle manufacturers that his company represents are also onboard.

“Our goal is to produce a show that anglers and sportsmen and women in the Midwest will be eager to attend year after year,” said Show Manager Paul Fuller. “From bass to pike, from bluegill to salmon, this show will cover it all. Exhibitors will include major fishing tackle manufacturers; boat manufacturers; local fishing tackle retailers; lodges, guides and camps from throughout North America; travel regions, local fishing clubs, taxidermists and much more. In addition, the Expo will offer seminars from regional and national angling experts and other sportsmen and women at the top of their game. This is my 36th year in sport show management and I’ve never been more excited about a new show.”

“The Schaumburg Convention Center is a relatively new facility offering many amenities for both outdoor enthusiasts and exhibitors. It’s an exhibitor-friendly facility with easy move-in and move-out,” Fuller further said. “The Convention Center is attached to the Renaissance Hotel offering relatively inexpensive lodging at a first class hotel. Parking will be free for both the consumers and the exhibitors. The Convention Center provides easy access for show goers across the area and particularly from Northern Illinois, Southern Wisconsin and Northwest Indiana, in fact, the entire Great Lakes region.”

Dover, NH – February 27, 2012 – From March 16-18, the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, New Jersey will be transformed into a saltwater angler’s paradise at the Saltwater Fishing Expo. Hundreds of exhibitors will be offering deals on the latest in saltwater fishing gear, apparel and fishing trips. The Saltwater Expo represents the entire spectrum of saltwater fishing with inshore and offshore equipment, light tackle to big-game tackle and everything in-between. In addition, the Expo will have a large number of fun activities and educational seminars that are designed to appeal to saltwater fishing enthusiasts of all ages.

“The Saltwater Fishing Expo is entirely ‘geared’ towards people who love saltwater fishing,” said Show Director Paul Fuller. “The expo is the place to be if you want to get great deals on tackle, see a wide variety of boats or simply have fun while checking out our exciting exhibits and activities.”

Looking for inspiration to land a world-record fish? Show goers will need to check out the 81.88 pound striper that Greg Myerson caught this past August. Myerson’s catch broke the previous 29-year old striper world record. Don’t miss this monster fish.

A new and exclusive feature at this year’s Expo is the American Fly Fishing School. The school’s fly fishing experts will have a casting pool right on the show floor where they will offer continuous fly fishing instruction. Additionally, they will have a learning center where show goers can see fly tying demonstrations and receive professional advice and tips. There isn’t a better opportunity to learn the precise techniques of fly fishing.

If you are in the market for a new boat, then you definitely want to check out the Saltwater Expo’s Boatyard. The expo features aisle after aisle of the very latest in saltwater boats with special show prices. The Boatyard will also have a full selection of boating accessories and electronics.

On Saturday, March 17, and Sunday, March 18, children of all ages can practice the casting skills needed for bass fishing. The three most used lure presentations in bass fishing – flipping, pitching and casting – will be taught. At the end of the event, your children should be bass fishing experts!

Additionally, Sunday, February 18, is Family Day when children 11 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. The first 100 children through the doors will receive a free Plano tackle box. Family Day also includes a fun scavenger hunt where children can receive a prize by visiting our youth-friendly attractions and having their checklist stamped.

@ the Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow, Oaks, PA – February 16-19, the World Fishing & Outdoor Exposition, Suffern, NY – March 1-4 & The Saltwater Fishing Expo, Somerset, NJ – March 16-18:

Porte-Bote – Booth 414 @ Oaks / Booth 819 @ Suffern / Booth 236 @ Somerset

On the anniversary of 40 years of continuous production, Porta-Bote International has unveiled its new high-performance portable folding boats. See them at the show!

The internationally patented Porta-Bote is now available in the Genesis and eXxstream Series of 8′, 10′, 12′ and 14’ models with hulls weighing in at 54, 67, 77 and 97lbs. respectively. All Porta-Botes can be opened in just a few minute, weigh half as much as comparable aluminum boats and store easily with their 4 inch (11.4cm), flat folded size. The tough hulls carry a 10 year limited warranty by the manufacturer, never need painting and are unaffected by saltwater, fuel and even battery acid.

Naturally, Porta-Botes are ideal for the boating enthusiast who enjoys fishing, hunting and sailing but lacks the space to store ordinary boats. Porta-Botes are also extremely practical for owners of small autos and Rvs since they easily stow on the roof or side of the vehicle. By eliminating the need to tow a heavy trailer, fuel costs are significantly reduced.

In addition to being used as an owner’s main craft, Porta-Botes make excellent ship-to-shore dinghies since they take up so little space on board sailboats and cabin cruisers.

As for performance, Porta-Botes leave similar sized aluminum boats and inflatables in their wake only needing half the horsepower and using half the fuel of these heavier boats. The hull’s design traps the bow wave and guides it under the boat to dramatically reduce drag while increasing speed and stability.

Smart Troll – Booth 310 @ Oaks / Booth 434 @ Suffern / Booth 509 @ Somerset

“Smart Troll” measures lure depth so you know how deep the lure or bait is trolled. It also measures the temperature at the depth of the lure. “Smart Troll” is the answer to the question; “is there a way to tell how deep a lure runs?” It is the only electronic system that enables you to tell how deep your lure is when trolling.

“Smart Troll” also tells you the water temperature at the lure’s depth. It is an electronic system designed to help you know exactly how deep your lure (or bait) is running when trolling for fish. It can be used with any ordinary fishing rod and reel. You can fish straight off the boat, or use ”Smart Troll with a downrigger, outrigger, flat lines and even with planer boards.

You can use ”Smart Troll” for both fresh water and salt water fishing…and it is very easy to use. Whether fishing with lures or fishing with live (or cut) bait… ”Smart Troll” will help you to increase your catch!! “Smart Troll” tells you exactly how deep you are trolling a lure, cut bait or live bait.

The ”Smart Troll” system includes a Hand-Held Receiver, a Hydrophone and one or two Sensors. It has the ability to monitor one lure or two lures (at the same time) and is very easy to use. Simply attach the small Acoustic Sensor between your leader and main line (with the lure or bait of your choice attached to the other end of the leader). The leader can be any length that you choose. The sensor is so small (0.5 inch diameter) and light (about 1 ounce in air and virtually weightless in water) that it hardly affects the action or “feel” of the lure and is not noticeable at all when fighting a fish.

The ”Smart Troll” Sensor incorporates tiny electronic circuits that monitor the lure’s depth and temperature and transmits a signal through the water to the boat. Every 10 to 15 seconds the sensor sends an encoded acoustic signal through the water to the Hydrophone. The Hydrophone converts it to an electrical signal and the Receiver “reads” the electrical signal and displays the lure’s depth and the water temperature at that depth. It works GREAT at Depths over 200 feet and speeds of up to 4.5 MPH and with over 100 yards of line out.

Guides: Polished Zirconia ceramic ring. The Zirconia ring has similar qualities to Silicon Carbide without it being brittle. It offers the smooth, strong surface for today’s braid lines

Reel Seat: Aluminum hoods and two lock nuts, graphite body give you strength without the weight for a 4 seasons rod that will not leave you cold in the winter

Gimbal: Aluminum Gimbal with rounded edges for comfort in the fight out of the belt

The 5’6 model is a true speed jigging rod, short light weigh made for a full day of jigging

The 6’6 model is the perfect alternative to heavy party boat rods. Can also serve as a shorter popping rod for the angler that wants to try their hand at jigging and popping. Or be just the right tool when the fish are too big for the 7-8’ popping rods as realized on the Cape this season.

The 7’6 popping rod is the perfect rod for the novice and the seasoned angler alike. Light weight to cast all day, throws a plug very well and the soft curve of the rod makes fighting and lifting large fish as effortless as possible.

Desktop Scouting

By Stu Bristol

By far the most asked question at my sport show seminars is: “How do you go into a strange area and instantly find fish or game? Do you have a staff of hunters and anglers that go before you and make notes?” Sorry to disappoint you people but the secret to pre-scouting success is sitting right on top of my desk in the office; my desktop computer with a high speed web connection.

I may have been one of the forerunners in the field of desktop scouting but given today’s technology on desktop computers, digital telephone, laptop computers and the new tablets, just about everyone can duplicate my techniques.

I begin with a road map, either on paper or, as I prefer, a DVD land navigation software that integrates both road maps and genuine U.S.G.S. topographic maps. I locate the area I will be hunting, fishing etc. and copy and paste a segment of the road map and then the corresponding area on the topo quadrangle.

By examining the topographic projection I can see the contour of the land, lake, pond or river. I take note of contour lines that are close together indicating steep terrain. If I’m fishing and the contour lines are close together along one shoreline, I can be certain the water column will be deeper along that shoreline, probably holding coldwater species.

If I am scouting for deer I look for what I call “game funnels.” These are areas that all game, especially deer will have to ‘funnel’ down or be forced through a narrow part of the terrain such as around a vernal pool or between a ridge saddle.

Next I’ll look for wooded marshes. These are indicated by small hash marks to simulate marsh grass. If the background color is green, there is a minimal amount of water and hunters can walk through. If the background color is blue you will need a canoe.

Many times within those wooded marshes that are indicated by marsh grass and green background color there are elevation changes or “islands.” These are prime places for trophy whitetail bucks to bed or hang out during the bulk of daylight hours to escape hunters. They will move in and out of these sanctuaries at or before daybreak and again at dusk. Set up a ground or tree blind taking wind direction into account and your success should increase.

The same method of scouting can be utilized even before heading out looking for wild turkeys. All wildlife species are creatures of habit. They sleep somewhere, they feed somewhere and they prefer certain terrain features to court a mate.

Wild turkeys will most often roost in softwood trees a few yards inside green fields or in the deep woods, within sight of a woodland opening and/or a small silent stream. They avoid noisy brooks and wide rivers.

Some of the same given facts can be utilized for deer and turkeys. First rule of thumb is to find the hens and find the does and the male counterparts will find you. Never lose sight of the most glaring fact associated with fishing and hunting is that the hunter/angler becomes a play actor.

The fishing lure you present is really an extension of yourself in that you manipulate the lure to imitate food. Look at each of your most productive lures and you will quickly see that you are the “puppet master.” In my upcoming book I refer to myself as “The Deadly Imposter.”

While turkey hunting in the spring you assume many roles including a lovesick hen a challenging gobbler, young jake, etc. but never forget you are a play actor and the section of woodland you selected is your “stage.”

Successful deer hunters rely upon their ability to locate the travel routes of deer both male and female. They very often use grunt calls, rattling antlers and bodily fluid scents to fool their prey.

Begin with road maps, topographic maps a good quality compass a handheld GPS receiver and the willingness to re-examine your role as the hunter. Hone your performances and come prepared.

For a face-to-face discussion on this topic, meet me at the DCU Center, Worcester, MA on February 10 – 11 when I present seminars on desktop scouting. Visit www.sportshows.com for times. Questions and comments are also welcome at my website, www.stubristol.com or find me on Facebook.

Welcome to Spruill’s Pasture Hunting Club Outfitters. We invite you to our rustic 1950′s era hunting camp and experience what it was like to be a part of one of the old deer hunting clubs that used to be prevalent in Northeastern North Carolina. Located in the heart of the Indian Woods area of Bertie County, North Carolina, Spruill’s Pasture’s hunting camp consists of a clubhouse and several cabins that can sleep from 2 to 6 people. The Pasture Tract is privately owned family land that dates back to the 1830’s and is comprised of nearly 3,500 acres of pocosin swamp and high ground timberland where white-tailed deer, black bear, and wild turkey’s abound.
